Who is noble thread

The creamy background against which the colors play illuminates them. The naturally dyed colors, which I created for Aquarelle, marry beautifully, in perfect, peaceful harmony. Colors and geometric shapes appear in a random fashion, like the flowers in a wild garden. The shawl grows organically. Aquarelle is knitted almost entirely in garter stitch with a fingering weight yarn on US5 needles. Chevrons and bobbles, as well as a very simple, very open edging bring dimension to the shawl.

The changes in color and pattern keep you entertained, guiding you to the next section. I chose to make Aquarelle a large shawl, so you can easily wrap yourself in it.

The arched crescent shape makes it easy to wear. The Aquarelle kits are hand dyed using natural dyes only. I find myself drawn to sweaters that gracefully balance minimalism with visual interest, and embrace simple lines… sweaters you can live in. As a designer, and a hand dyer, I find inspiration in my surroundings.

Bayou found its inspiration in the stillness of the bayous, in their mossy tones, and their striking pops of natural color. For Bayou, I chose a natural, undyed yarn for the body of the sweater, and I dyed three glorious coordinating colors using magical natural dyes. The natural, undyed colors, are the perfect still water canvas to showcase the beauty of the yoke.

The fingering weight yarns make this sweater as light as air with a touch of warmth. The sleeves are knitted in the round from held stitches.

Bayou is seamless. The yoke design is a beautiful old shale pattern in three colors, framed by two rows of bobbles. The yoke design sits at mid chest, highlighting the beauty of the neckline, sitting gently on the shoulders. The body and the sleeves have minimal shaping, just a few short rows at the top of the back. She continues to design and post patterns once a month for likeminded crafters.

Hegwer takes pride in the multi-step, days-long process that she must take to dye yarn. She says that much of her materials come from local North Carolina farmers and companies. In an ode to her Paris heritage, she does have some fibers that come from France. She is also proud of the local community of fellow artists that, even during COVID, stay in contact via phone or email with others that are in the same field and believe it is important to have original works.
