However, during their wedding ceremony, a man steps forward to announce that Rochester is already married. Rochester was hiding her away all along, in order to keep Jane and the reader from discovering the truth.

Horrific suspense is when the reader knows something awful is going to happen, but the precise nature of it remains unclear — like waiting for a jump scare in a movie.
